Return to the Archclericy of Veluna's home page

Hands of gods formed the Vale of Luna in times long forgotten by man. From the great mountains the heavens sent snow to melt and flood the vale every spring. The trickling begins to build and combine quickly in their hurried travels. Streams, brooks and creeks that cover Veluna turn the millstones and float the barges on their way to distant markets.

The two great rivers of Veluna are the two great rivers of the Flanaess, the Velverdyva and the Fals. The Fals river flows with deep brown currents twisting between it's banks. The fish here grow fat for the dinner table on this rich river water. Falsrigde and Whitehale sail the surface of the river with barges and fishing boats. The treeless banks of the Fals river are steep sloped and rocky, with some flood plains along the wide shallow areas. The most common barge on the river is the covered ore barge. Reaching sizes of a hundred feet long and filled with tons of unrefined ore from the Lorridges' smaller mines without furnaces. They can make the trip down river to Mitrik in a week or more. The upriver trip is an exhausting job that can last up to a month. The crew will have to push the barge, trudging the sides of the deck with long poles or be towed by lines of men though the swifter narrows. Before reaching Mitrik the river widens and grows deep. Here near the Crook Stream is where the great mansion barges of the rich moor. Mitrik itself is situated only a couple of miles from a swift moving section of river called The Juggler. This part is strewn with boulders the size of keeps that only submerge during the most extreme spring floods. So treacherous are the currents some river men hire special guides just for these few miles of danger.

The Velverdyva meets the Fals river on a vast flood plain. The Velverdyva River, often called the Velva, has clear blue waters when they meet. The two currents slowly turn a light sepia in the winter or deep green in the summer by the time they cross under the Peace Bridge to Furyondy. By now the barges are often filled with autumn's harvest of grain, vegetables or livestock. It is always busy with full keelboats running down the center of the vast river and being pushed empty up the sides. The Rhennee work these waters well past Nyr Dyv and onto Selintan River and the great City of Greyhawk. The trip to Greyhawk from Mitrik by river can take from three to six weeks with the slow trip back up the river taking three times that long. Diocese act against much of the piracy reported trying to keep the merchants and travelers safe. Alongside Whitehale and Grayington the river is quiet yet powerful running along rich farmlands centuries old. Fewer stone watchtowers can be seen than ample tributaries from the highlands before entering the Dapple Woods. Through the peaceful Dapple Woods the river goes from areas that are almost still to areas so swift that can scare the daylights out of seasoned travelers. The Devarnish town of Jarl is the point where the Great Western Road meets the river. From here the river is much calmer making it the trade path where everything imaginable can be seen shipping up and down its waters. The Velverdyva takes it's time traversing the Iron Woods and past Verbobonc, Gnarley Forest and Dyvers before emptying into the Nyr Dyv.
