cross the green Vale of Luna you will see
the fields and pastures around towns and cities divided by stone wall, wooden fence and hedge row into hundreds of small plots of
land. The larger ones belonging to Nobles and Churches with the remaining small properties grants to subjects and freemen in exchange
for service and loyalty.
Mainly what you see is waving stalks of grain swaying in the High Summer breeze. The most common grain grown is wheat with rye and barley being next. In the dry fields of Whitehale and Grayington cotton is grown side by side with the wheat. Near Jarl and the river's lowland you will find flax, chickpea, and rice growing in wet meadows. Mitrik is surrounded by evenly spaced rows of plumb and cherry trees that fill giant orchards for miles around. Around Veluna City, fields of potatoes, carrots, onions, beans, and other vegetables are the most common.
Devarnish, near the edges of the Dapple Woods, houses large oak forests where the Baron allows peasants to run their pigs in for fattening on the acorns and undergrowth during Ready'reat and Sunsebb. Devarnish is rich in swine. They seem to be everywhere outside the walls wandering the streets in search of garbage to eat. The pigs ear marks allows them to be identified and the tax brand on their hind quarter show they have been registered. As you approach the foothills of the Lortmils, grassy hillsides become covered in great flocks of sheep grazing under the watchful eye of the shepherd. In these areas of rolling green hillsides and rich blue sky the teachings of Rao echo. In these foothills, Rao is strongest with the peasants who seek a calm peaceful balance in there life. In Whitehale, Kempton, and Grayington, romantic grand ranches breed horses for the country and for work on the farms. Cattle, chickens and geese seem to be in all areas wandering around farm houses during the day and filling the stables and waddle homes at night.
The woods are patrolled by rangers in search of poachers. Hunting the Baron's or Viscount's forest is strictly controlled. Villains hunting noble game will be arrested and fined with possible jail time. The usual wildlife fill the woodlands. Deer, squirrel, wild geese, boar and rabbit are hunted by the nobles and their rangers for filling the castle pots. Wolves, foxes and bear are controlled in the Brewfest hunts. Grayington's nobles and clergy are competitive falconers hunting pheasant and other small game through the lowlands.
The greatest tool for these resources are the roads and rivers of Veluna. They carry the food from the farms to the great store houses in the cities. The nobles trade the food, fulfilling their need first, then to the distant markets of the Flan. The grain and salted meat are bought, sold, then bought again on market days along the Great Western Road. The sales bring in trade and taxes and enrich the kingdom coffers. Village leaders barter for their village goods in a half dozen languages to bring the best price.
The brimming cornucopia that Veluna is blessed with must rank as one of the greatest fortunes of a good, free Flanaess. The grains of the Vale travel upriver to Highfolk. Devarnish exports tons of food, flax and spun wool to Verbobonc every year and Veluna is one of the many kingdoms that support the embattled Shield Lands in their quest for liberty from their oppressors.
